Job Shadow Day

Demonstrates the connections between academics and careers, exciting students to learn by making their education more relevant.
Builds community partnerships between schools and businesses that enhance the educational experience of all students.
Introduces all students to the requirements of profession and industries to help them prepare to join the workforce of the 21st century.
Encourages an ongoing relationship between young people and adults.

Suggested Activities for Workplace Hosts

Orient the students to the office through a tour of the departments.
Discuss the Mission, Purpose, and Goals of your workplace.
Engage in a brief discussion of departmental functions.
Bring your student to an "informal" lunch.
Ask to see your student's resume.
Try to get your student to discuss their interests and hobbies.

Suggestions for Demonstrating Workplace Skills to Students

Telephone Skills-demonstrate the correct procedure for answering phones.
Involve students in meetings and/or conferences.
Computer Skills-dictate a memo to your "shadow."
Client/Customer Contact-if your job requires customer contact, have your student observe the exchange.
Get the student to assist you in doing your job.

Integrate SCANS Skills and Competencies into Job Activities

SCANS - are the skills and competencies needed by future workers in order to survive and thrive in a high performance workplace. The skills are a part of the National standards that are being integrated into the education curriculum and are transferable from school to the workplace. Examples of SCAN skills are listed below:
