Johnson County
School District #1 (JCSD#1) was the first
district in the State of Wyoming to achieve the
Tobacco Free Schools of Excellence (TFSE)
status. This accomplishment was achieved in
February 2004 through collaborative efforts with
JCSD#1, 21st Century State Incentive Grant, and
the Johnson County Tobacco Prevention Program.
Since that time 14 districts and 109 schools
have met the criteria across the state. The
following criteria are in place throughout JCSD
#1 and all visitors, fans, participants, staff,
students, and coaches on JCSD #1 property are
asked to abide by the TFSE rules.
1. School has a policy prohibiting tobacco
use by students, all school staff, parents,
visitors, and everyone on all school property,
in school vehicles, and at school-sponsored
functions away from school property.
2. Schools enforce the policy prohibiting
tobacco use by students, all school staff,
parents, visitors, and everyone on all school
property, in school vehicles, and at
school-sponsored functions away from school
property.
3. Students who use tobacco are provided
the opportunity to participate in a program
designed to help them quit tobacco use. (TAP –
Tobacco Awareness Program)
4. Students who are cited for tobacco use
or break school tobacco policy are directed to a
school sponsored program designed to help them
quit tobacco use and/or understand the
influences that promote tobacco addiction and/or
to participate in a community advocacy capacity.

5. Staff who use tobacco are provided a
school sponsored opportunity to participate in a
program designed to help them quit tobacco use.
6. The school provides specific instruction
about the short- and long-term negative
physiologic and social consequences of tobacco
use, social/community influences on tobacco use,
media literacy, peer norms regarding tobacco
use, and refusal skills at every grade level.
7. The school sponsors a youth tobacco
prevention coalition designed to actively and
meaningfully involve a diverse and varied
population of students.
8. At least one staff and five youth from
the school regularly participate with the local
community tobacco prevention coalition (if the
community has one). |
